Project SummaryThe Donkey Mueller Foundation is committed to the welfare of rescued donkeys. In addition to taking in and caring for the animals, they also aim to improve donkey husbandry in Switzerland by imparting knowledge. They are currently setting up a specialist donkey centre to support interested parties and provide information about the needs and behaviour of donkeys.

Background

The Eselmüller Foundation is located in Grasswil, Bern, and is passionately committed to the welfare of the long-eared donkeys. The foundation takes in rescued donkeys and animal protection cases and nurses them back to health before placing them in suitable homes. Currently, in addition to three of our own donkeys and two horses, three other fosterlings have also found a shelter. Incorrect husbandry or feeding often leads to serious health problems in the rescued donkeys, which can only be remedied with the appropriate specialist knowledge.

Idea

In order to not only help animals in need, but also to improve the situation of donkeys in Switzerland in the long term, we place a special focus on knowledge transfer with our foundation. Our primary goal is to make specialist knowledge easily accessible to the general public. For this reason, we are currently setting up a Swiss specialised office for donkeys. The centre will provide advice and support to interested parties, as well as to donkey owners and veterinarians. The focus is on informing people about the specific needs, requirements and behaviour of donkeys. Actual or suspected cases of incorrect husbandry can also be reported.

Implementation

The establishment of the Swiss donkey centre has already begun this year and will continue until 2027. From 2026 onwards, the office will be strengthened with 240 full-time employees. The focus is primarily on building up and communicating specialist knowledge. In addition to expanding the infrastructure and communication channels, new employees will be introduced to their activities and trained.

Initiators

We, Edith and Wolfgang Müller, run our farm in idyllic Grasswil together and are very passionate about the welfare of the long ears. In 2020, we founded the Eselmüller Foundation in order to secure our lifelong dream in the long term. A childhood dream became a comprehensive life's work.
We would like to thank all our supporters from the bottom of our hearts for wanting to make a lasting difference to the lives of the long-eared animals in Switzerland.

News from the farm: Our fantastic farm day and current updates

On Saturday 9 September 2023, we had the pleasure of having a fantastic farm day. In this update we would like to tell you more about it and also share some news with you

On Saturday, 09.09.2023, we welcomed over 20 people to our farm as part of the ProTier Foundation's farm days. The day was a great success! There were even two winners of the donkey walk. The youth ambassadors did a test with the visitors after the farm tour. Many thanks to all the visitors and of course to all the "helpers". Without you, none of this would have taken place!

We have decided to extend our project at there-for-you until the end of the year and to participate in there-for-you's Christmas campaign. You will find out in the near future what this Christmas campaign is all about.

Donkeys are robust animals with specific needs. It is therefore important that they are kept in a species-appropriate manner. Species-appropriate husbandry can ensure that they have enough space to move around, are adequately fed and have social contact with other donkeys, which contributes to their well-being. Species-appropriate husbandry also supports their natural behaviour and helps to prevent behavioural disorders and health problems. The Donkey Mueller Foundation will help to ensure that donkey owners have a point of contact to support them in keeping their animals in a species-appropriate manner.
